Do you crave tender, bravely honest experiences with others in a safe container?
Are you interested in exploring the depths of paradox within and between us?
Does the combination of quiet, creative time in nature and emotionally dynamic playing with others appeal to you?
Are you excited (and scared) to play in the emergent field of relational group dynamics - with its divisions, alignments, subgroupings, and other drama?
Join us for a four-day immersive adventure in the rolling hills of Devon, discovering together our inner parts and our group dynamics. The workshop will be rooted in parts work, a practice that involves tracing individual and collective selves through therapeutic methods, sensory experiments, mindfulness exercises, and social structures that invite creative imagining and courageous honesty with ourselves and one another. Our workshop hopes to bring us into deeper relationship with our parts and each other’s, and to do this we anticipate oscillating between intense interpersonal relating, including explorations of conflict, frustration, shame, sadness, and on the other hand, quiet and creative contemplation. We will use our personal explorations and those of the group to play with interpersonal dynamics that are patterned throughout larger communities and the world.

Theories of parts work suggest that we are each made up of parts-of-self, who often feel different ways in a given moment. One part may feel resentful, while another feels embarrassed, or angry at others’ parts, or playful, or delighted. Our goal will be to observe and deepen our relationship with these parts. We will diagram and express from parts-of-self, working with various modes of expression drawn from Internal Family Systems, Fooling, Psychodrama, Voice Dialogue, Tavistock Group Relations, Authentic Relating, Psychodynamic group therapy, and Circling. We will dialogue and dance with our harsh critics, our frightened inner children, our responsible managers and our angry fighters. We will find within us access to care, compassion and curiosity, harnessing this loving energy to support our most under-resourced parts in ourselves and the group.

This retreat is designed for anyone open to creative, vulnerable connecting, and there is no need to be familiar with the practices we will be sharing prior to attending. You might be a therapist looking to play with new practices, or a tired technical worker interested to unblend from conditioned postures, or a somatic practitioner with an edge they would like to work on, or a mother who wants to explore a recurring conflict with her son, or an activist who craves a refreshing approach to deconstructing patriarchal capitalistic mindsets, etc! Participants should be open to sharing about their emotional realities with others, and open to experimental practices that include movement, silence, creative expression, hearing other peoples’ challenging emotions, and sometimes needing to set boundaries or opt out if needed.

The intensive will be a mixture of rigorous and restful activities, with many opportunities to share, journal, reflect and listen in the beautiful, natural setting of Devon. In between the structured activities we will eat together, and have time in the evening for songs and games by the fire.

The leadership will be playing too! And working to notice, express, love, and listen. We will fail at times. And these failures will hopefully move towards repair, and more failure and play and repair. We will model the inscription of play into learning for the group, and collaborate with you to nourish and sustain the co-creative process. We are so excited to learn and play together with you!
